Ex-FBI Director Comey's testimony in Congress is gripping must-see-TV in the US. Here are the main highlights:
- He called Trump a liar for saying that the FBI was in chaos under him.
- He made the detailed memos because he was afraid Trump would "lie" about their private conversations.
- The President's spokesperson came out during the testimony to assert that the President is no a liar.
- Comey said he hoped there were tapes of his conversations with Trump as Trump had alleged, and he gave his consent for their release, if they do indeed exist. The President's spokesperson refused to deny that there are indeed tapes of their conversations.
- Regarding the infamous dossier that was prepared on Trump by an ex-English intelligence agent, Comey refused to answer any questions in open session.
- He also refused to answer in open session any questions about the Flynn investigation, the Russia investigation.
- Comey believes he was fired because of the Russia investigation. “It’s my judgment that I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” Comey said. “I was fired in some way to change, or the endeavor was to change, the way the Russia investigation was being conducted.” Comey said this was “a very big deal,” not only because of the FBI’s investigation. He also said it was “a very big deal” if any Americans were involved in coordinating with the Russians.
- The former FBI director also revealed he was the one who leaked his memo, through a Columbia University professor, about Trump demanding "loyalty" to him over dinner.
- In a cryptic note, Comey mentioned that the FBI expected Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from the Russia-related investigation. This turned out to be correct, as Sessions would later do just that, but Comey would not specifically say why he thought the attorney general would recuse himself.
